Suffering and God's Sovereignty

Suffering is inevitable in this world filled with sin. Yet God is sovereign.

After the earthquake in Haiti last week I was reminded of a book I read last year. The book is called Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. It is a collection of messages/lectures given at the annual Desiring God conference. I also thought some about how Christians respond to a major tragedy where the loss of life is great. The Baptist men usually are some of the first to go to the people in need. Then, there are some folks who claim to be believers who do/say things that do not accurately convey the Gospel. Let me give you a link to a blog that I thought was really helpful. Check this out.

Gus is gone.

We said goodbye to Gus last week. It was a sad day for Steven. As he told the story on the way home from selling Gus I knew why this car was more than just a car. It was one of a few materialistic things that was consistent in his life for the last 8 years. A friend called him up one day and told him that he needed to come check out this car that he should buy. It was such a great deal Steven agreed. He drove it home that day never imagining asking his wife on their first date in the car much less installing a car seat for his daughter. So much had changed in his life, but Gus was always there.

Even on the way from Augusta to North Carolina after a visit for Easter when the bumper fell off all Gus needed was a little rope and duct tape. Then, last year when the wreck happened we thought it was horrible, Gus got all fixed up with a new windshield and hood and we got paid the full amount that he was worth (more than we would have actually been able to sell it for). PTL for insurance and friends that can fix cars! Oh, and I finally began to drive good 'ol Gus in preparation for the stick shift exclusivity of Brazil.

I took some pics of Steven and Gus the day before we said goodbye. This is not the beginning of our goodbyes and certainly not the last : (

Perspective

I enjoy when people put into words exactly what I had been thinking. 22 Words did that for me. Check out this post from yesterday.
