First, I failed at my attempt to stay awake last night... I made it until 2am- a little into the 3rd quarter. It was exciting this morning to watch the highlights.

We are finally needing to purchase a crib for our "baby" aka toddler. Our lives are so crazy... Karis is almost 15 months old and we've never owned a crib.
All the stores here carry the models that the side drops down, but it makes me nervous to purchase one of those. Is this a valid concern? I think companies in the USA can't even produce these?
Also what about the convertible style? Is this a good idea? What if God gives us another baby and Karis is already sleeping in the crib that's been converted into a bed? Is it cost effective? Or could we purchase a crib and little girl bed for the same or cheaper than a convertible?

I honestly think I would either get a convertible crib. If you get the convertible you can actually just take the front off and lower the mattress to lowest point, and it becomes a toddler bed. We did that with Asher's convertible bed so we never needed to buy him a toddler bed, and we'll be doing that with Lorelai's convertible as well. Even if you happened to get pregnant this month or next month by the time you had the baby she should be ready to move in a twin bed by then, and the new baby could have the convertible. I personally wouldn't use the convertible as a full-sized bed if you still have a baby that needs a crib because it's cheaper to do twin beds than full size just from mattresses alone. Hope that helps!

My parents have a crib like the one in those photos at their house. It was mine when I was a baby and is a drop-side crib. My dad used cable ties to make sure the side wouldn't drop or move anywhere, and also cut about 6 inches off the bottom to make it lower to the ground. I'm not sure if all drop-side cribs are super tall, but that one was... and I had to use a step stool to put Elliott in there.
I can't tell you what is cheaper or smarter in terms of a convertible bed vs crib plus toddler bed... but I can tell you what we plan on doing when the time comes. Our crib (http://tinyurl.com/y9q9flh) converts to both a toddler bed and day bed, but to do so, you have to order the conversion kits. We plan on buying a toddler bed for Elliott when he gets old enough and someday in the future using his crib for baby #2. I haven't really created a plan for if we need two cribs at once. Hopefully by the time the Lord blesses us with another child He will also prepare Elliott to sleep in a 'big boy bed'!
Like Deana said you can buy the conversion kit to turn the convertible crib into a toddler bed, but we decided against paying for it and, as I mentioned, just took the whole front part off which made it a toddler bed. The only difference is it doesn't have a half-rail thing going across like typical toddler beds. This never posed a problem for us, though, because our kids never fell out anyway, and even if they did they were already so close to the floor that it never hurt. BUT you could get a basic bed rail that you would use for a twin bed for it, I'm sure. You can get those for like $20-$30 here. Like I said, though, we never needed that. Now that Asher is in a twin bed we use the rail just as a precautionary measure. It would hurt a lot more to fall from it. :)
We bought Asher a crib at 16 months old and we just got one that could turn into a toddler bed. But then by the time we were ready for him to be in a toddler bed (around 2 years) we had a new baby on the way. We ended up just buying a cheap toddler bed for Asher and putting Jack in the crib. The plan is that eventually the crib will be Jack's toddler bed. And then after our first stateside I'm thinking a boys room with bunk beds! That was probably way more than you wanted to know...

Reading your blog reminds me of how much we miss you guys. We have been so blessed to call you friends. Unfortunately, this friend doesn't know jack squat about cribs and would probably give you dodgy advice. :)
